45,000m² of a durable, waterproof coating to baggage handling floor 4m below sea level.
Background
Situated on reclaimed land, at the time of construction this was the world’s largest passenger terminal.
Its lower floor, several metres below sea level, houses the baggage handling facilities. The 600mm tethered slab construction was subject to the ingress of seawater both through cracks and general seepage, and it was impossible to achieve a dry substrate on to which the specified epoxy floor finish could be installed. An urgent technical solution was needed to allow the airport to open on time.
The Solution
Flexcrete offered the Cemprotec E-Floor system which is applied to damp surfaces to form a waterproof wearing course. Tested for water permeability under 10 bar pressure, E-Floor has equivalent properties to an extra 1000mm of concrete. To seal cracks exhibiting water infiltration under pressure, the non-caustic Fastfill WP was used. The application was finished with Cemprotec Sandseal 75, to provide an easy clean finish and enhance the longevity of the skid-resistant finish. The result is an exceptionally hard-wearing waterproof floor.
