Hygienic Coatings
Maintaining Sterile Environments
There are many critical factors affecting the maintenance of a sterile environment in hygiene sensitive areas such as food manufacturing plants, breweries, kitchens, pharmaceutical and healthcare facilities. Preventing the growth of mould, bacteria and other micro-organisms is arguably the most vital consideration of all. In order to provide the interior of a structure with effective anti-microbial protection, a hygienic coating for internal walls or ceilings must provide a surface that is easy to clean, hard-wearing and free from joints, seams and other features which might harbour dirt and bacteria.
Complying With Hygiene Legislation
Flexcrete’s Biodex water-based hygienic coatings provide total protection against bacterial contamination and ensure that internal walls and ceilings comply with today’s rigorously enforced hygiene legislation.
The anti-bacterial coatings inhibit the spread of harmful micro-organisms through an innovative combination of encapsulated in-film protectant and silver ions. Proven to combat the growth of a wide range of mould, fungus, bacteria and healthcare-associated infections (HCAI’s) – including E.coli, Aspergillus and Penicillium – they are virtually odourless, non-leaching, non-toxic and release no hazardous solvents. Totally safe to apply in heavily regulated and controlled environments, they will not taint any foodstuffs during application and can be rapidly applied by brush, roller or airless spray in extremely humid conditions without affecting adhesion.
Solutions for Hygienic Environments
One of the biggest threats to food and drink manufacturers, hospitals, pharmaceutical facilities and operators in the leisure industry is the growth of mould and bacteria. Download this information sheet to find out more about our materials.

Biodex hygienic coatings are rapid curing and two coats can be applied in a single working day, so any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum and work can be carried out whilst facilities are still in normal operation.
Our Biodex hygienic coatings are suitable for both new build and refurbishment work and are available in a wide range of technical specifications, decorative colours and finishes including matt and sheen. Due to their long life span, our hygienic coatings dramatically reduce the expense and inconvenience associated with repetitive maintenance.

Hygienic Coatings Problems and Solutions
- Exposure to Permanently Wet Conditions
- Rapid Anti-Bacterial Protection
- Risk of Hospital-Acquired Infections
The Problem
Internal surfaces in breweries are subjected to high humidity, constantly wet conditions due to cleaning and flushing, and thermal shock caused by sudden changes in temperature. Surfaces are also be susceptible to heavy mould growth from the presence of migrant yeasts and sugar particles present during the brewing process.
The Solution
Hygiene coatings provide a seam-free, easy-clean surface and can be safely applied over the existing wall surface for an effective refurbishment solution.
Biodex HB can be applied directly over tiled areas, or other substrates, without the need for a primer so down-time is kept to a minimum – a vital consideration in the brewing and beverage industries.
Biocidal protection is incorporated within Biodex HB so it actively resists the growth of mould, bacteria and yeasts during its lifetime. Biodex HB can withstand humid conditions, extreme temperature changes and permanently wet conditions without deterioration.
The Problem
An internal wall finish is required for a new food processing plant. The plant is designed to allow rapid changes in production so the organisation can respond quickly to changes in customer preferences.
The Solution
A waterborne fluid applied membrane – as opposed to a rigid cladding system – is the most suitable solution as it produces an effective hygienic, easy clean finish and, following any structural alterations, will allow a protective surface to be reinstated quickly and easily, simply by the application of more material to the affected area.
Bond Prime is first applied to the new cementitious substrate prior to the application of Biodex HB which cures to form a high build, elastomeric, biostatic coating with an attractive matt finish.
Any entrapped substrate moisture is able to escape in the form of vapour without leading to blisters in the film, splitting, cracking or delamination from the surface. The coating incorporates active protection against mould, bacteria and yeasts – an important factor in the food industry.
The Problem
Hospital-acquired infections (HAI’s) are caused by a wide variety of organisms and can lead to the death of patients. A hygienic wall and ceiling is required to provide an anti-bacterial finish to reduce the risk of HAI’s.
The Solution
Once the existing substrate is thoroughly cleaned, Biodex Sheen can be applied by brush, roller or airless spray to form a protective, decorative coating incorporating active in-film protection slowly releasing biocidal ingredients to combat against the growth of HAI’s.
Biodex Sheen is water-based and is totally safe to use in hospital environments as it cures without releasing strong odour or hazardous solvents.
The non-toxic biocide incorporated within Biodex Sheen will not leach out when subject to condensation or intense cleaning regimes; it remains a permanently safe and active part of the coating throughout its lifetime.
