Concrete Reinstatement to Repair Washout Damage on Cast In-situ Marina

Reinstatement of Concrete for Marina Damaged by Seawater

Background

Situated on the Somerset coast, Watchet Harbour is in an area of one of the highest tidal rise and fall levels in Europe.

During construction of the new marina, cast in situ concrete was damaged by seawater, leading to an urgent programme of remediation.

The Solution

Having experienced the washout damage inflicted by early immersion, the Flexcrete range of coastal engineering products was preferred for the purposes of concrete reinstatement. Where re-casting was deemed viable, rather than risk the use of normal concrete once more, a site mix was modified with Polymer Admixture 850, an advanced copolymer dispersion which enhances the performance of the mix and reduces vulnerability to early immersion wash out. Where it was possible to repair without re-casting, Marine Mortar S was used due to its rapid resistance to wash-out. Performance in this respect is equalled by Monolevel 844SP which was used both to fill smaller defects and cover general surfaces with an engineering grade waterproof fairing coat, in this case matched to the colour of the surrounding concrete.
