Waterproofing of Shoreham Service Reservoir

851 – A proven structural waterproofing solution

Background

Southern Water provides water supply and wastewater treatment services across 4,450 square kilometres from East Kent, through parts of Sussex, to Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Raw water is taken from aquifers (70%), rivers (23%) and from storage reservoirs (7%), and each day the company supplies 524 million litres of drinking water from 89 water treatment works along 13,793 km of water mains. Southern Water also treats and recycles 718 million litres of wastewater at 365 treatment works after it is pumped through a network of 2,375 pumping stations and 39,600 kilometres of sewers.

One of Southern Water’s facilities is Shoreham Water Service Reservoir. Southern Water and Barhale Trent Utilities approached Flexcrete to provide a waterproofing solution for application to the brick soffits. It was essential that the waterproofing material was approved for use in public water supplies.

Drinking Water Approved Structural Waterproofing Material

Flexcrete’s most well proven waterproofing solution was chosen for this project –  Cementitious Coating 851 which is non-toxic when cured and is authorised under Regulation 31 for use in the supply of drinking water. 851 is a high performance, two component, waterborne cementitious modified polymer coating which is ideal for structural waterproofing, resisting both negative and positive pressure under a 100 metre head.

It forms a hard, highly alkaline coating which not only protects brick and concrete substrates from the effects of aggressive acid gases, moisture and chlorides, but also has greatly enhanced chemical resistance to withstand any sulphates or chemicals in the soil above the reservoir.

The structural waterproofing work was carried out over the Christmas period and the application contractor had a strict timeframe in which to complete the work. To ensure rapid application, Cementitious Coating 851 was spray applied to the soffits. 851 is available in two colours – grey and white – to ease application with the white top coat allowing premises to be returned to service after just 7 days’ cure time. Barhale Trent Utilities were able to hand back the Reservoir well within the specified timeframe for the waterproofing work to be carried out.
