Chloride protection using a Migratory Corrosion Inhibitor on 3,500m² of concrete deck.
Background
Following tests carried out by the Swedish Concrete Institute (CBI), it was found that the concrete deck in one of the central Stockholm car parks contained a high level of chlorides caused by deposits of de-icing salts from the vehicles.
Especially where cracks were visible, the threat of corrosion of the steel reinforcement was such that urgent remedial action was needed.
The Solution
Cemprotec MCI® 2020, a clear, organic, water-based coating was applied to the entire deck. Suitable for new and existing structures, MCI® 2020 is proven to reduce chloride initiated corrosion. MCI® 2020 forms a protective monomolecular layer on steel reinforcement which it seeks out as it migrates through concrete, thus inhibiting further attack and neutralising existing corrosion currents. Cemprotec MCI® 2020 is effective in extending the service life of structures which are vulnerable to chloride attack. MCI® 2020 is applied in just one or two coats to allow for economic application. Compatible with surface coatings, a decorative epoxy was used in this case.
