Concrete Refurbishment of Platform 1 Station Building

Background

With around 500,000 passengers using Bangor Railway Station every year, the station is the busiest on the North Wales coast.

Over the years, the station infrastructure had dilapidated, as it occupies an exposed site subject to damaging and prevailing wet westerly winds. Network Rail commissioned a major £1.7 million renovation project, including the creation of a new 140 space pay and display car park, together with a complete refurbishment of the Platform 1 building. Of brick construction and clad in a decorative render, excessive movement in the building had resulted in the render cracking and delaminating, requiring its removal and replacement.

The Solution

Network Rail approached Flexcrete for concrete repair recommendations and a replacement render which would be quick and easy to apply at up to 50mm thickness. Following a number of trials, Monolevel RM, a polymer modified, fibre reinforced cementitious render was chosen, due to its ability to be spray applied, its high bond strength, its excellent tensile and impact strength, and its high quality finish. In addition, Monolite, a lightweight polymer modified cementitious mortar was used to reinstate the concrete on the door lintels of the building. Both products are easy to finish, allowing the contractor to match the profile of the original 1848 design.
