Hygienic Coating Protects Finland’s Largest Milk Processor

Hygienic coating applied to 12,000m² of internal walls.

Background

As Finland’s largest milk processor with turnover of 1.9 billion Euros, Valio produces a range of dairy products including milk, cheese, yoghurt, butter and milk powders.

With a total of 15 production plants across Finland, Valio is firmly established as the leading milk brand and the company is strongly positioned in neighbouring countries Russia, Sweden and the Baltic States with subsidiaries in the USA, Belgium and China. To meet increased demand for low mineral whey powders used in baby milk, Valio has opened a new plant in Lapinlahti and a hygienic coating was needed for the internal walls of the production areas. It was important that the chosen product could be applied to new, cementitious substrates and provide a hygienic surface able to withstand rigorous cleaning regimes.

The Solution

Biodex Sheen, a water-based, semi-gloss hygiene coating, was chosen for this new build project due to its ability to provide a seamless, easy clean wall covering whilst combating the growth of mould, fungus and bacteria. Formulated using state-of-the-art silver ion technology combined with the latest generation biocide technology, Biodex Sheen incorporates active in-film protection, allowing for the ultra-slow controlled release of active ingredients into the coating film. Biodex Sheen could be safely applied in this environment as it is waterborne, non-toxic, non-leaching and non-tainting, so there was no threat of contamination during application. Environmental considerations were high on the agenda with this project as Valio were seeking to construct an energy efficient plant with reduced emissions. The vapour permeability of Biodex Sheen was also crucial, as entrapped moisture can escape in the form of vapour without leading to splitting, cracking or delamination from the surface. Biodex Sheen can withstand steam cleaning and other rigorous cleaning regimes without deterioration, with a typical lifespan of at least 10 years.
