Background
The Grade II* listed clubhouse at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club in Burnham-on-Crouch dates back to 1931. This award-winning building was designed by Joseph Emberton, one of Britain’s most significant architects during the inter-war period and one of the first Englishmen to be considered a modernist architect. Although there was some controversy at the time about the modern appearance of the building, it was considered an architectural masterpiece, winning a host of awards from the likes of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club has become established as one of the UK’s most important amateur yacht sailing clubs, producing Olympic medallists and international champions. The external façade had deteriorated due to the clubhouse’s quayside location where it is continually exposed to salt laden winds, which had also caused corrosion to the steel. Following concrete repair work a decorative, protective coating was required to prevent further degradation of the structure.
The Solution
Flexcrete’s CE marked Concrete Repair and Protection System was specified on the basis of its outstanding track record of use in harsh marine environments. Steel anchor pins and exposed reinforcement were coated with Cemprotec E942, a standalone anti-corrosion coating with excellent chloride resistance. Monomix, a low density, high build, structural grade mortar, which can be applied up to 80mm in a single application, was used to reinstate areas of damaged and removed concrete. Where required, minor cracks were filled with Monolevel FC, which was also used to achieve a fair-faced finish.
Metal-Prime WB was brush applied to the exposed steel port hole surrounds whilst Bond-Prime was applied to all areas prior to overcoating. Monodex Smooth, a high build, decorative, elastomeric anti-carbonation coating which resists water ingress whilst allowing damp substrates to breathe, was applied to the façade as an embedment coat. Cemprotec Flex-Tape was embedded into the coating over cracks and joints. Monodex Textured, a waterborne, acrylicbased wall coating with an attractive, textured finish, was chosen as the top coat. It incorporates an advanced in-film, non-leaching biocide, inhibiting the growth of mould and algae, ensuring the clubhouse maintains its clean, bright appearance.
