Extensive Concrete Refurbishment to Protect from Carbonation & Effects of Weathering
Background
The DWP Building in Wigan required extensive external refurbishment due to the deterioration of the concrete elements caused by carbonation and the general effects of weathering.
To meet the Client’s objective of extending the service life of the structure, an EN 1504 certified concrete repair system was required. To provide further protection and improve the appearance of the building, the engineers specified a high performance decorative and weatherproof anti-carbonation coating.
The Solution
The Flexcrete high performance concrete repair and protection system was selected as it provided a complete, single source solution. After treating the reinforcing steel, high build repairs were easily produced with Monolite, a high yield mortar applied to saturated concrete without a primer.
Once the reinstatement work was complete, the façade was protected with a combination of Monosil, a clear masonry waterproofing solution for decorative infill panels with Bond-Prime and Monodex Smooth used on the bare concrete to give 15 years’ protection from carbon dioxide ingress.
