Decorative coating for Moor Hall

Repair and Coating of Facade and Gable Ends.

Background

Moor Hall is a fine dining restaurant with luxury rooms based in Aughton, West Lancashire. It has recently been awarded 3 AA rosettes for culinary excellence, plus its first Michelin Star. Moor Hall was the only establishment in the North of England to be awarded a Michelin Star in 2017.

The restaurant is set in five acres of gardens with views over a lake, said to be the remains of a medieval moat. The building is a grade II listed gentry house of mid-sixteenth century origin. The site was acquired by Andy and Tracey Bell in 2015 and it has undergone a multi-million pound renovation. The restaurant is run in partnership with friend and business partner Mark Birchall who was previously Executive Chef of 2 Michelin Star L’Enclume in Cumbria. The stone façade of the building was rendered and damp-proofed and an aesthetic, protective coating was required for application to the external walls to provide a high class finish.

Outstanding Weatherproofing Technology

Flexcrete’s Monodex Smooth coating was specified for application to the façade of the building and the gable ends, due to its excellent track record of use on prestigious and heritage buildings all around the world. W J Structures Ltd initially cleaned and washed the surface and all deep pockets requiring repair were filled with Monolite – a lightweight, high build, easily trowellable cementitious mortar which can be applied up to 100mm in a single application. Supplied as a single pack product, it simply requires the addition of clean water on-site.

The surface was then levelled with Monolevel FC, a cosmetic grade fairing coat which fills minor holes and defects and provides a smooth surface finish prior to overcoating. The façade and gable ends were coated with Monodex Smooth, a highly advanced, waterborne, elastomeric coating which is ideal for application to external walls. It provides excellent protection against carbonation, chloride penetration and water ingress, yet allows damp substrates to breathe. Able to provide exceptional weatherproof protection, it incorporates an active biocide which prevents the growth of mould and fungi on its surface. Due to its elastomeric properties, it is able to withstand thermal and structural movement without cracking or flaking and maintains an attractive appearance throughout its 15-year lifespan. Even in harsh climatic conditions, Monodex Smooth demonstrates excellent colour retention and strong UV resistance.

Monodex Smooth is a single component, water-based coating so it is user-friendly and cures without the release of strong odour or hazardous solvents. It is ultra-fast drying, enabling two coat applications on the same day and it can be applied all year round. Available in a range of both standard and special colours, magnolia was chosen for this project. The exterior of the building now looks very welcoming and in pristine condition, befitting of a restaurant of this stature.
