Hygienic Coating for Internal Walls and Ceilings of Slaughterhouse

Hygienic coating used for refurbishment of internal walls and ceilings totalling 1,300m2

Background

KLS Ugglarps is Sweden’s second-largest slaughterhouse with around 630,000 pigs, 95,000 cattle and 25,000 sheep slaughtered every year. The company has production facilities in Ugglarp, Hörby and Kalmar. KLS Ugglarps sells pork, beef and lamb products under its own brands Småland Meat, Ugglarps, Grill’it and Olsson Selected.

The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Danish Crown, Denmark’s fourth-largest business and the world’s second largest pig slaughterhouse. An internal wall and ceiling coating was required for the refurbishment of the production facilities in Kalmar and it was important that the chosen product was able to provide hygienic protection whilst being able to withstand harsh conditions such as constant cleaning and extreme temperature changes ranging from very cold to highly humid conditions.

The Solution

Biodex HB, a water-based, elastomeric, high build, anti-microbial coating with a matt finish, was specified for application to the walls and ceilings due to its proven ability to combat the growth of many species of mould and bacteria, including E.coli. Formulated using state-of-the-art silver ion technology combined with the latest generation biocide technology, Biodex HB incorporates active in-film anti-microbial protection, allowing for the ultra-slow controlled release of active ingredients into the coating film throughout its long life span.

The waterborne nature of Biodex HB was an important consideration for this application, as the coating is low odour, non-tainting and non-hazardous with ultra low volatile organic content (VOC), so there was no threat of any foodstuffs being contaminated. Rapidly and easily applied by brush, roller or airless spray, it provides a completely seamless, easy clean finish. Due to its elastomeric nature, Biodex HB is able to withstand thermal and structural movement and extreme temperature changes, for example during steam cleaning, without cracking and flaking. Biodex HB is available in a range of attractive colours, of which white was chosen for this project. This is an ongoing refurbishment project, with more work to follow.
