Newmarket Racecourse is set in the Suffolk countryside and is often referred to as the ‘home’ of British horse racing. With a capacity of 45,000, Newmarket Racecourse has two courses – the Rowley Mile Course and the July Course, both of which are used for flat racing. The Rowley Mile is used for racing in the Spring and Autumn, whilst the July Course is used in the Summer.
2016 is a year of celebration at Newmarket Racecourse as it marks 350 years of making significant history in both the sport of horse racing, as well as English heritage. King Charles II returned to Newmarket 25 years after his last visit following Restoration to the Throne and spearheaded the development of the town. To mark the 350 year anniversary, a series of special events are being held at the Racecourse and the town as a whole. In preparation for the landmark anniversary, a rejuvenation of the rear elevation of the Rowley Mile Grandstand building was carried out. Comprising precast concrete panels with areas of brickwork, the fascia needed freshening up to enhance its appearance as it has a prominent position in the Guineas Courtyard and the Royal Box entrance. Award-winning design company Natural Green Creative Spaces was commissioned by the Jockey Club to rejuvenate the fascia, whilst also making the space more attractive with bespoke planters, benches and signage.

Natural Green Creative Spaces recommended Flexcrete products for this prestigious project due to their international track record of successful use and the ability to provide a complete package of repair and protection materials. Monolevel FC, a cosmetic grade fairing coat, was first used to fill minor blow holes and defects and provide a smooth surface finish. It was applied in grey to match the parent concrete.
Monolevel RM, a fibre reinforced, cementitious render mortar, was then applied to level the brickwork construction prior to overcoating. It offers distinct advantages over alternative products as it can be applied in a single coat, thus saving time and money for the end client. Bond-Prime was applied to the complete fascia prior to the application of Monodex Ultra, a waterborne, decorative, anti-carbonation coating which is designed to enhance the appearance of masonry whilst providing at least 10 years’ of protection against carbon dioxide diffusion and water ingress.
Monodex Ultra is ultra-fast drying, enabling two coat applications on the same day and facilitating all year round usage. Due to its water-based composition, Monodex Ultra cures without the release of strong odour or hazardous solvents, so there was absolutely no disruption during application. It was applied in white to brighten and lighten the whole fascia, thus enhancing the appearance of the rear elevation of the building significantly. Monodex Ultra is backed by CE marking in accordance with the demands of BS EN 1504 Part 2, the pan European standard for surface protection systems for concrete.
