Miso Factory, Niigata City, Japan

Our hygienic coatings are designed for application in food production facilities and other hygiene sensitive environments, so when a new miso factory was being constructed by Malta Miso Company in Niigata City, Japan, our Biodex Sheen coating was the first choice product for providing hygienic protection to the production area walls.

Due to the sterile conditions in the factory, it was important that the chosen coating could offer active protection against the growth of mould, bacteria and yeasts, whilst being able to withstand conditions of high humidity and steam cleaning without deterioration. It was also crucial that the chosen product was suitable for new build applications and for use in food production areas without any adverse effect to the environment or the foodstuffs being prepared.

The factory is used to prepare miso, a slow fermented soybean paste with a strong salty flavour which forms one of the bases of Japanese cooking. It is used in sauces, with meat, fish, vegetables and tofu but above all in miso soup, a part of the staple diet of the Japanese and as common as rice.

Biodex Sheen, a high performance, waterborne hygiene coating, was specified for application to the bottom section of the production area walls as it actively prevents the growth of micro-organisms and limits the spread of harmful germs through an innovative combination of encapsulated in-film protectant and silver ions. Perfect for new build work, it is water-based, non-toxic and non-leaching, so is ideally suited for use in food manufacturing.

Like other Biodex coatings in the Flexcrete range, Biodex Sheen is elastomeric and vapour permeable and won’t crack or flake even when subjected to condensation, steam cleaning, substrate movement or extreme temperature changes. It is rapidly and easily applied by brush, roller or airless spray and two coats can be applied in a single day, ensuring minimal downtime and disruption. Biodex Sheen has an attractive sheen finish and is available in a range of colours, of which white was chosen for this project.
