Anti-Carbonation Protection for Busy London Hotel

4,415m² of Aggregate Concrete Panels & Columns Repaired & Protected from Carbonation

Background

Occupying a prominent position adjacent to the Hammersmith Flyover on the main route to central London from Heathrow Airport, the Novotel London West required external refurbishment to prevent further damage from carbonation and to improve aesthetics.

Built in the early 1970’s by Cunard, this 630 guestroom hotel was designed to replicate the appearance of a cruise liner, and with the forthcoming Olympics in mind, the Client is planning to install a multi-coloured light display to showcase the recent renovation of this striking façade.

The Solution

The texture in the aggregate finish required a thorough cleaning with 4000 psi pressure washing and treatment with Biodex Wash to eradicate moss growth. Spalled concrete was mechanically removed and repaired with Steel Reinforcement Protector 841, Monomix and Fastfill. Working off cradles from the top down, all surfaces received an initial coat of Bond-Prime followed by two roller coats of Monodex Smooth produced in a special colour to provide anti-carbonation protection and decoration with a 15 year life expectancy.
