Background
A major refurbishment of this parmesan factory was carried out where over 240,000 different types of Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano cheeses are manufactured. A specialist coating was required for application to the walls and ceilings of the cheese storage warehouse following structural alterations. Conditions in the storage facility are consistently maintained at a temperature of 17°C and 80% relative humidity.
The client was looking to improve anti-bacterial and anti-mould protection in the storage warehouse and it was critical that the coating was completely non-toxic and odour free so as not to adversely affect the parmesan cheese being stored in the facility, as odour contamination can potentially have very serious and costly implications. It was also important that the chosen coating was able to breathe and withstand constant cleaning and washing with detergents.

Biodex HB – a waterborne, elastomeric, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial coating – was chosen for this project due to its ability to provide a complete defence mechanism against the growth of mould, bacteria, yeasts and algae. As Biodex HB is water-based, it cures without the release of any tainting odours or heavy solvents and does not present a risk of contamination during application.
Unlike fungicidal paints, the anti-microbial system incorporated in Biodex HB does not leach out when the surface is subject to condensation or intense cleaning regimes. This means that it remains effective against micro-organisms throughout its design life. The seamless finish of Biodex HB is also a distinct advantage, as it allows no hiding place for bacteria and allows far greater ease of cleaning that alternative products incorporating tapes, seams, joints and fixtures.
For this project, the client carried out their own tests to assess the degree of risk regarding microbial contamination (Method M.U.1962-2: 06). These tests actually revealed a 84% reduction in bacteria in the air and a staggering 96% reduction of bacteria on surfaces when Biodex HB was applied.
