Basement Waterproofing at Palace Theatre, London

Basement waterproofing solution for London landmark.

Background

London’s Theatreland is famous the world over and attracts large numbers of UK and international visitors.

Cleanliness in the urban environment is of great importance, and standard procedure for Westminster City Council is to wash the streets every night. This has caused major water ingress problems in the basement of the Palace Theatre, for which an innovative, durable and environmentally friendly solution was sought by the owner of The Really Useful Group, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The Solution

To prevent water infiltration from above through pavement lights and other leaking joints, Cemprotec Elastic was reinforced with Cemprotec 2000- S, a waterproof tape with elastomeric properties to accommodate differential movement. The stairways and corridors through which the public gain access to the bar area were also suffering from constant dampness on the walls which has been overcome with Cementitious Coating 851 reinforced with Cemprotec 2000-S at joints. To finish off the project, the walls were re-plastered and painted to match the existing decor in the theatre.
