Repair and Waterproofing Protection at Ormesby Water Treatment Works

Repair and protection of rapid gravity filters and sedimentation tanks.

Background

Situated in one of the driest parts of the country, Ormesby Water Treatment Works was constructed in 1935 on natural, undisturbed sub-soil.

After 70 years of service, the cast in-situ reinforced concrete structure was suffering from advanced deterioration, necessitating a complete refurbishment as part of a billion pound investment programme instigated by Essex and Suffolk Water. All materials had to be suitable for contact with potable water to reinstate the integrity of the Plant.

The Solution

The rapid gravity filters and sedimentation tanks were prepared prior to Steel Reinforcement Protector 841 being applied to the exposed steel, followed by Monomix to fill all voids. Monolevel 844SP was used to level all surrounding surfaces with Cementitious Coating 851 providing the final waterproof protection. Noted also for its resistance to chemicals used in water treatment processes, Cementitious Coating 851 is also highly effective in reinstating inadequate cover. In the UK, the system is fully approved for permanent contact with potable water.
