Hygienic Refurbishment for Ostravar Brewery in Czech Republic

Hygienic refurbishment of the brewing production areas totalling almost 600m²

Background

Ostravar Brewery has been in operation for over 100 years and now forms part of Staropramen, the second largest brewer in the Czech Republic. The Ostravar plant is a red brick complex combined with plastered surfaces and the primary beers produced in the brewery include Ostravar Original, Ostravar Premium, Ostravar Bazal and Staropramen Velvet. The products are exported to 37 different countries, mostly in Europe and North America.

The brewing production areas comprised plastered walls and ceilings coated with a standard paint. Over the years, these surfaces had deteriorated due to high humidity, extreme temperature changes, intense cleaning regimes and the presence of migrant yeasts and sugar particles during the brewing process. A Flexcrete anti-bacterial coating had previously been applied at the Staropramen Brewery in Prague and due to its impressive performance and durability, a comparable anti-microbial coating was sought for application in the Ostravar Brewery.

The Solution

Biodex HB, a high build, matt finish, waterborne biostatic coating with encapsulated biocide and silver ion technology, was specified on the basis of the outstanding track record of Flexcrete anti-bacterial coatings. As the active ingredients are chemically bound onto the polymer backbone, the coating is proven to provide a long-term defence against the growth of micro-organisms including mould, bacteria and yeasts. Bond-Prime was initially applied to seal and consolidate the surface prior to the application of Biodex HB to provide a hygienic, seamless, easy clean finish on the walls and ceilings.

The waterborne nature of Biodex HB was absolutely critical for this project, as the coating could be rapidly and safely applied by roller and brush without any risk of contamination as it is non-toxic, non-leaching, non-tainting and ultra-low odour. The use of solvent-free materials was a vital consideration, as odour contamination of manufactured products can potentially have serious, and costly, implications in breweries. Once in service, Biodex HB is highly resilient and is able to withstand conditions of high humidity and extreme temperature changes from -50°C. to +80°C. without cracking or flaking. With a vapour permeable formulation, it allows for moisture vapour release even when the environment is constantly wet due to the high amount of water used for cleaning and flushing. Biodex HB is CE marked in accordance with the demands of BS EN 1504-2 and is available in a series of both special and standard colours, of which white was chosen for this application.
