Flexcrete’s hygienic coating used as part of a hygienic refurbishment in beer storage tank

Background

Frýdlant Brewery is one of the oldest breweries in the Czech Republic with origins dating back to 1381. Known for the production of classic Czech lagers and beers under the Albrecht brand, a major expansion and redevelopment was carried out in 1629 and the brewery was extended even further in 1817. In 1949, beer production was halted altogether due to the use of ancient technology and dilapidated buildings and the premises were temporarily used as a warehouse for cheese and vegetables. Nevertheless, brewing production was resurrected in 2010 when the whole complex was rejuvenated.

The beer tank storage area was completely refurbished. New plaster was installed and a hygienic coating was then sought for application to the internal wall areas to provide added protection against the growth of mould, bacteria and yeasts. This was critical as there are potentially many species of micro-organisms present in the brewing environment, or in raw materials used in brewing, that can contaminate beer.

The Solution

Biodex HB, a highly advanced, waterborne anti-microbial coating, was specified due to its proven ability to combat micro-organisms and its track record of use in breweries and other hygiene sensitive environments worldwide. Formulated using state-of-the-art silver ion technology combined with the latest generation biocide technology, Biodex HB incorporates active ingredients which are chemically bound onto the polymer backbone, providing a long-term defence against the growth of micro-organisms including mould, bacteria and yeasts.

Bond-Prime was first applied to seal the painted plaster substrate before Biodex HB was rapidly and easily applied by roller and brush to provide a totally seamless, easy clean finish with no joints or irregularities in which bacteria could otherwise thrive. Biodex HB is low odour, non-tainting and non-hazardous with ultra low Volatile Organic Content (VOC), so there was no threat of contamination from solvents or strong odour. With a durable, easy clean finish much thicker than conventional paints, Biodex HB can withstand intense cleaning regimes and extreme temperature changes without impaired performance or cracking. The coating is available in a range of attractive colours, including special colours, and white was chosen for this project.
