Green Roof Waterproofing at Australian International School in Hong Kong

Green Roof Waterproofing over an area of 725m².

Background

The Australian International School provides primary and secondary education to over eleven hundred students. The school has an innovative green roof design which creates an open air, eco-friendly work space able to accommodate two classes at the same time.

The roof space features an Australian-themed garden housing art installations and lush greenery. With stunning views across Kowloon, the green roof serves as a platform for teaching students about the environment, as well as providing a recreational space. It is truly an oasis of green in the heart of Kowloon, one of the most densely populated areas in the vibrant city of Hong Kong. This innovative architectural design was recognised when the project was awarded the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Medal of the Year.

The Solution

When a waterproofing solution was needed for the green roof, environmental considerations were high on the specification list. Cemprotec Elastic – a water-based, protective coating with an ultra low VOC rating and certification to EN 1504 Part 2 – was specified to waterproof the structure. Permanently elastomeric, it is also independently tested for root resistance, a vital consideration in green roof design. Over joints and areas of known movement, Cemprotec Elastic was reinforced with Cemprotec 2000-S reinforcing tape to ensure an effective seal. The waterproofing and protective properties of Flexcrete’s products were truly put to the test on this project when shortly after completion, the roof effectively bore the full force of Typhoon Vicente, the most powerful storm to hit Hong Kong since 1999.
