Decorative Anti-Carbonation Coating Makes a Grand Entrance at Kang-Chiao Bilingual School, Taipei, Taiwan

3,620m² durable, decorative protection required for demanding exposure conditions.

Background

After nine years exposed to harsh climatic conditions on a mountainside in the outer suburbs of Taipei, the structural concrete and decorative GRP pillar construction at the grand entrance to the school showed serious deterioration.

With constant high humidity, cold winter conditions and heavy attack from UV in the summer, the surfaces had discoloured and cracked. In choosing a refurbishment system, the extensive growth of mould and lichen was another important consideration confronting the engineers.

The Solution

Given that locally produced coatings lacked the properties to assure an effective and long lasting result, Monodex Smooth was specified. With elongation above 270% and proven resistance to CO2 ingress, Monodex Smooth anti-carbonation coating offers a high level of protection against extremes of weather. It will also resist mould and lichen growth throughout its long life. The substrate was cleaned by high pressure water jetting before priming with Bond-Prime followed by two coats of Monodex Smooth for a 15 year design life.
