Concrete Repair & Reinstatement of Concrete Jackets to Pipe Stacks

Concrete Repairs to Maintain Integrity & Protect Against Corrosion

Background

INEOS Chlor is the world’s third largest chemical manufacturer with a major UK facility at Runcorn, Cheshire.

Here steel pipe stacks on its chlorine derivatives plant, which are jacketed with concrete to provide corrosion protection and heat insulation, were suffering from corrosion resulting in cracking and spalling of the concrete jacket. Repairs were deemed necessary to maintain their integrity and maintain the continuous operation of the plant.

The Solution

Opus Industrial Services, a specialist in the application of concrete repair and protection systems, chose Flexcrete products to carry out the work on the concrete jackets because their speed and easy of application would have the minimum impact on a busy production schedule. Monomix, a hand applied, polymer modified, fibre reinforced, high strength repair mortar was used to fill large cracks and voids up to 80mm deep in a single application, whilst Cementitious Coating 851, a brush applied, cementitious modified polymer coating was used to provide durable and waterproof protection in this aggressive environment.
