Concrete Repair & Protective Coating Covering an Area Spanning 350m²
Background
Forthview House is a two-storey office building close to Scotland’s Forth Road Bridge. It is operated by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and staff provide support services to the Royal Navy. Originally built in the 1960’s and covering an area spanning more than 2,000m2, it has been made into one of the MoD’s Hub and Service Delivery Area (SDA) office locations, which has resulted in an increase in the number of MoD personnel working out of Forthview House from 180 to 239.
To accommodate the increasing numbers of staff, the MoD site has undergone significant renovation, including demolition of old farm buildings, an increase in the number of car parking spaces and an external refurbishment and extension of Forthview House. The renovations tie in with a new operating model for the Defence Infrastructure Organisations (DIO), the property and infrastructure arm of the MoD.
The Solution
Flexcrete has an excellent track record of providing high performance materials for Ministry of Defence projects and the company’s products were specified as a complete repair and protection system could be provided, including concrete repairs and decorative, protective coatings. Monolite, a lightweight, high build, easily trowellable cementitious repair mortar, was used for window sill repairs and to build the surface up to profile. Monolite can be applied up to 100mm in a single application and is CE marked in accordance with BS EN 1504. Another of Flexcrete’s CE-marked repair mortars, Monomix, a high performance mortar designed for general purpose, structural repairs, was used for lintel and mullion repairs. Both repair mortars have a very high bond strength exceeding the tensile strength of concrete, thus ensuring a monolithic repair.
On completion elevations were treated with Bond-Prime before the application of Monodex Smooth, a waterborne, elastomeric, high build decorative coating which provides effective protection against carbonation and water ingress, whilst allowing damp substrates to breathe. Monodex Smooth was specified in a special mushroom colour.
