Repairs to Soffits of Concrete Floors & Corrosion Protection of Cast Iron Support Structure

Background

The Old Liverpool Royal Infirmary, a landmark, Grade II listed building close to the City, opened in 1890 and still retains many of its original features making it popular for the filming of Victorian hospital dramas.

It closed in 1978 and remained dormant for 16 years before being bought by the University of Liverpool. Partially converted into a modern conference facility, further refurbishment was undertaken to provide facilities for DNA Research. Built with reinforced concrete floors to reduce the risk of fire, the soffits were showing signs of deterioration with spalling of the concrete.

The Solution

Specialist contractor, Dale Structural Repairs chose Flexcrete’s Monolite, a polymer modified, low density, high build concrete repair mortar, which is ideally suited to overhead repairs. It can be applied to soffits at thicknesses up to 100mm in a single layer, whilst its lightweight composition enables ease of application without adding additional dead load. Cast iron support beams were treated with Cemprotec E942 a two component cement and epoxy modified polymer coating that provides stand alone anti-corrosion protection.
