Hopcott Service Reservoir, Nr Minehead, Somerset

Repair and protection of concrete surface suffering from soft water attack and erosion.

Background

Built over 30 years ago, Hopcott Service Reservoir, situated close to the seaside town of Minehead in Somerset, was suffering from attack by soft water causing severe erosion of the concrete.

A high priority for water authorities is conservation of valuable water resources and the maintenance of drinking water quality. Therefore Wessex Water’s choice of high performance, compatible materials from Flexcrete’s range to reinstate damaged and eroded concrete surfaces was a key part of their overall infrastructure management.

The Solution

Repairs to large voids were carried out with Monomix, whilst eroded surfaces and minor defects were reinstated with Monolevel 844SP. To provide long-term waterproofing and protection from future degradation, 2 x 1mm coats of Cementitious Coating 851, a 2 component cement modified polymer coating with excellent chemical resistance, was spray applied to all surfaces. 2mm of 851 has the same water impermeability as 1 metre of conventional concrete. All products used have Regulations 31 Approval for use in contact with drinking water.
